For the mountains may depart
and the hills be removed,
but my steadfast love shall not depart from you,
and my covenant of peace shall not be removed,
says the Lord, who has compassion on you.
Isaiah 54:10 (RSV)

There is a sense of loneliness that sweeps over us when we realize how short our own lives are and how temporary many things that are important to us, like jobs and homes, truly are. And when we see the devastation of natural disasters and contemplate the potential waste caused by nuclear weapons, we wonder if there is anything in the universe we can lay hold of that will offer us some security and sense of permanence.

In a troubled time for the people of God, God assured the prophet Isaiah that there was one thing that would always exist—God’s loyalty to his people. In a dangerous, shifting world, our Creator hovers close and promises us his presence. We can turn to God when relationships dissolve, when our homes or even towns disappear, and when we fear that the very worst of disasters is upon us. There is an “everlastingness” to the things of God, for he is not limited to time or space. He is Eternal! And therefore, our place in him is secure.
